The Kingdom of Heaven lies hidden from all but those who look for it. Perhaps this is why so few see it. But for those looking, it breaks forth in everything, everywhere.
The song Hard to Get by Rich Mullins, for years confounded me. I never reconciled this idea that God remained elusive to people. The older I get, the more these words make sense. The main lines from this song I’ve sung so many times is this, “Well I memorized every word You said. Still I’m so scared, I’m holding my breath, While You’re up there just playing hard to get.” I conjure up this image of God dancing around, so as to not be so visible to the world. He desires praise, but He’s not flashy.
His actions exist as unmistakable, yet His face remains unimaginable.
I constantly interact with people who claim there is simply no evidence of God. God leaves thumbprints, but if you’ve never seen a thumbprint, you don’t know what you’ve found. God remains hidden to an apathetic world, but reveals glimpses of Himself to those who truly seek. Yet even then, in people’s lives dedicated to Christ, God often works, calling little attention to Himself in His handiwork.
If you don’t know what your looking for, you will never find God; and most people rarely attempt to look. God is just plain hard to get. But I like that about God. The “I AM” of the Bible isn’t flashy; He’s not into the pomp and circumstance of earthly celebration. Matter of fact, He chose His arrival into our world via manger, with shepherds acting as the welcoming committee. Its a wonder we EVER see God since He works through the humble, the ordinary, and the plain.
Though in my own walk with God, I don’t always see Him. I admit, sometimes it can be very hard. I am unsure of where God is sometimes, unsure if He really is listening, or if He’s left me to my own devices. But the words of Rich Mullins ring true,
“I can’t see how You’re leading me unless You’ve led me here
Where I’m lost enough to let myself be led
And so You’ve been here all along I guess
It’s just Your ways and You are just plain hard to get”
Here lies the fun of Christianity… it exists in the pursuit of God, who plays hard to get.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.” – Isaiah 55:8
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:13
