Jesus is nice and good, loving and caring, welcoming and gentle. God the Father is distant and unpredictable, sometimes mean and wrathful, judging more than loving, a bit of a jerk.
I viewed God and Jesus liked this as a kid yet I never could verbalize that thought. It was my theology of God, distinct, separate, and slightly bi-polar. And the Holy Spirit existed just an appendix of God, not really useful or thought of. I didn’t even realize this is what I thought until I found out I was wrong. It took me years of growing in faith for me to realize deep down that this idea I had of God simply was not true. I tell you this because I’ve realized I’m not the only one who ever believed this… Maybe you believe this too.
So how do we know God? Well Jesus is God, so it would stand to reason that when God humbled Himself to become one of us, the way He acted on earth is the same way He acts in Heaven. That means the way Jesus acts is the way God acts. Jesus was full of humility, compassion, empathy, kindness, and love. Jesus’ heart broke when He saw the hurting and the hungry. He filled with compassion for those who earnestly sought after Him. He grew sad when the people who saw His works still didn’t repent. He became angry when the religious misused and and mistreated others. He despised when people act fake. He loved sinners where they were at. He liked to have a good time. He played with children, raised the dead, and met people’s needs. He washed people’s dirty feet, and forgave the men who crucified Him. God did not change His personality when He came to earth. This is God, the God of the Old Testament and the New Testament; the God you pray to and the God who saves you.
God is not a jerk. The best way He could express Himself to the world was to be born in a manger, grow up as a working class carpenter, and die a humiliating and painful death on a cross. That is who God is. The Father shows Himself as the Son and reveals Himself to us in the Spirit. Praise be to God, for He is GOOD!
“I and the Father are one.” – John 10:30 NIV
