Proud of Me?

“I’m proud of you!” Everyone longs to hear those words. Many of us spend our lives striving to hear that phrase from our parents, our bosses, our spouses… We work at it and work at it. Before long our self-worth becomes joined to hearing those words. We look upon ourselves as not good enough unless we hear someone, anyone say they are proud of us. That is me…

Recently I’ve heard people tell me that “God is proud of you.” I couldn’t believe it. Not that I didn’t want to believe it, but it sounds strange and alien to me. How could God be proud of a sinner like me? Oh I try to impress, but I fall flat on my face all too frequently. Yet something stirs within me. What if… what if God really is proud of me, not because of what I’ve done, but because of who I am. I am His beloved son.

Reading “Drops Like Stars” by Rob Bell opened my eyes to the story of the Prodigal Son. I encourage you to pick it up, its a wonderful and tastefully short book. But upon finishing it, I realize that the Father in the story loved his wayward son, not because he came back, not because he apologized, but because he was his son! When we accept Christ we enter the Divine family as a full on member. My Father, who art in heaven, loves me…finds joy in me, is proud of me, because I am his son. Nothing can take that away…

We always need to do what’s right. We always should want God’s best for us. But we can never succeed in impressing God. There is no way to earn His affection.

So stop trying…

Rejoice, God is proud of you for no other reason than you are his!

“So he got up and went to his father. ‘But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.’” – Luke 15:20 NIV

God Bless,

A Father's Love: Hands
