“When Is God Good?”

When is God good? Is God good only when He feels like it? Is He good when things are only going well for you? Is He good when everything seems to go your way, with birds chirping and people singing “Its a beautiful morning…”? How about, is He good when life does nothing but dump on you; is He good then?

We say in church, “God is good all the time; all the time God is good.” We can rattle that off like so many other catch sayings that we have instilled in us like “just do it” or “eat more chicken.” But as opposed to the lasted marketing strategy, do we really believe it; do we really believe that God is good all the time?

Recently I have seen God outpour blessings on me and my family. I have watched God answer prayer after prayer in helping my parents and my wife and I. I have stood in awe of how much God has looked after me. This past Sunday as people were singing, I stood there praying and praising God for all that He has done lately for me. And then He asked me, “Are you willing to pray and praise, will you still believe I am good if life gets tough?” That was a hard question. And I tried to reason with God. “I’ll praise you as long as ______ doesn’t happen, or this ______ doesn’t happen either.” But God asked, “Will you still follow me if life happens?” I relented… I said, “Lord I will praise You no matter what…” as I recognized that I was going to, I had to, believe what I say frequently… that God is good all the time.

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” – Psalm 118:1

“Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said: “ Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD.” – Job 1:20-21

May we be people who recognize and believe that our God is good. May we be people who trust Him despite the whirlwind that we sometimes find ourselves in. And may we always praise Him!

God Bless,
